What the platform is built on, and what it connects to.
An auction platform sits in the middle of other systems: hosting, payments, accounting, content, marketplaces and messaging. These are the ones we work with most, and what each is actually for.
Infrastructure
Microsoft Azure hosts the platform. Auction traffic is unusual — six quiet days and then every bidder in the same sixty seconds — and Azure's automatic scaling is what lets capacity follow that curve instead of the average. Storage, backups and continuous monitoring sit here too.
Content management
Umbraco and Drupal are both used by customers who want their auction pages inside a larger content site. Umbraco is the more common choice among our .NET customers; Drupal comes up where an organisation already runs it and has editorial workflows and permission structures they do not want to duplicate. Either way, the auction data comes from our API and the surrounding content stays where your editors already work.
Payments
Stripe covers cards and digital wallets to an international standard, and is usually the right answer for an auction house selling across borders. Mollie is stronger on local European methods — iDEAL in particular, which matters a great deal if your buyers are Dutch. Several customers run both and route by buyer country.
Accounting
Exact connects through the integration API for invoicing, tax handling, financial reporting and reconciliation. This is the integration that decides whether settlement after an auction takes an afternoon or a week. It is the same pattern we used for Wolters Kluwer Spain's accounting connection.
Marketplaces
Invaluable and Lot-tissimo put your lots in front of bidder networks you do not own — Invaluable globally, Lot-tissimo across Europe. Worth being clear-eyed about: marketplaces bring reach, and they charge commission for it. They work best as an additional channel alongside your own platform rather than as the platform itself, which is an argument we make at more length in leaving the portal.
Messaging
MessageBird handles SMS and email delivery for bid updates, outbid alerts, closing reminders and payment confirmations. Where the event system decides what is worth telling a bidder, this is what delivers it.
