Case study

What changes when the auction is yours.

Portals are a reasonable way to start. They become expensive in ways that are not only financial.

The trade you make on a portal

A third-party auction portal brings you an audience you did not have to build. In exchange you pay commission on every lot, you present your sale inside someone else's branding, and — the part that matters most in the long run — the relationship with the bidder belongs to the portal, not to you.

You cannot see who nearly bought, and you cannot contact them next time. Your best buyers are the portal's customers, and you rent access to them per sale.

What an auction house gains by moving

AreaWhat changes
CommissionPortal commission per lot disappears. The platform is a fixed cost rather than a share of every sale.
BrandingThe sale happens on your domain, in your identity. Bidders remember your name.
Bidder dataRegistrations, bids and behaviour are yours, in your own CRM, available for the next sale.
FormatYou set bid steps, fee structures, auction types and terms. No waiting on a portal's roadmap.
ReachYou can still publish to marketplaces such as Invaluable and Lot-tissimo where it pays — as a channel, not as your only shop window.

A Hungarian example

One of our customers in Hungary hosts their auctions entirely on their own platform. In a competitive art and antiques market they concluded that third-party portals were not a necessity but a choice — and that owning the platform meant owning commission rates, branding and the client relationship together.

The lesson generalises. The size of your operation matters less than whether you intend to build a returning bidder base. If you do, every sale run on someone else's platform is a sale where you learn nothing you can use.

The honest counter-argument

If your bidders come overwhelmingly from portal traffic and you have no plan to build your own audience, leaving is not automatically the right move. The realistic path for most houses is both: your own platform as the home of your sales, with marketplace distribution as a paid channel on top. That is how our customers usually run it.
